Sony VPL-VW350ES 4K Projector

Some early Blu-ray movies didn't look much better than DVD. So one should not think that 4K content will automatically result in perfect image quality, or that 4K content is required before you can enjoy a 4K projector. The Sony VPL-VW350ES Projector is a 4K Home Theater Projector. This lamp based projector is capable of displaying 1,500 Lumens at its brightest setting with a native resolution of 4096x2160 , and is 3D capable. The zoom lens on the Sony VW350ES has an impressive zoom ratio of 2.06x combined with the ability to shift the lens which allows for flexibility in positioning.

There's very little digital noise, and the picture seems to pop off the screen without ever losing that film-like quality. The VPL-VW365ES is a clear upgrade from standard HD to true 4K resolution, at a price point that is within reach of competitors’ high-end HD projectors. A wider throw distance range also means that it can be easily integrated in large or space-constrained home theater environments. The Sony VPL-VW365ES is the least expensive true 4K home theater projector currently available, at $9999 list price.

Light Output

Three images in this picture gallery above, the first is 4K, the second 1080p, and the football game is 1080i. It is the least expensive of Sony’s three 4K projectors, and so far, they are the only company offering true 4K. When Sony released the HW40ES last year, they showed that a stripped-down version of a successful projector at a lower price point could be wildly successful. Applying those lessons to the VW600ES gets you the VW350ES, a super-detailed 4K projector at the lowest price point that resolution has ever seen. Most projectors these days can manage an accurate grayscale. Many can also manage a decent approximation of the Rec.709 color gamut.

Professional installation is a popular choice for projectors in this price range, but Sony designed the VPL-VW350ES for easy setup. It features a powered zoom lens and powered lens shift for adjusting the image either horizontally or vertically, to allow for off-center projector placement. Sony recommends a maximum screen size of 150", or 120" if you want to use the 3D feature. The JVC DLA-X700R and Epson LS10000 both cost about $8,000.

Projectors

With the fan exhaust positioned at the front of the projector, you don’t need to worry about wall clearance and room for air inhale/exhaust when installing. This helps maximize throw distance, for the biggest possible projected images. In the photo player above, the first three images are from HDTV, then three from Blu-ray movies, and finally, four 4K content images. To help you choose the right speakers, we recommend using Crutchfield’s SpeakerCompare Listening Kit. It includes a pair of studio-quality headphones, and a guide to getting the most out of your session, and a few other necessary items. We’ve carefully chosen the components of this kit to ensure a crystal-clear listening experience.

Give it a room with respectable control over light, and pair it the right screen, and you will have one impressive setup, that will blow away your friends and truly entertain you. SpeakerCompare tailors your listening experience to the exact headphones you have, so that what you hear is comparable to auditioning speakers side-by-side in person. Knowing which model headphones you’re using lets us remove any sonic coloring from your experience. Signal is resumed, or any button on the control panel or remote control is pressed, the lamp will light again. Not to belabor the point, but the VW350ES is a 4K projector.

Picture modes

While you don't get the native 4K resolution, these projectors do have other strengths. Also, the JVC's inputs are not HDCP 2.2-compliant, which will greatly limit its compatibility with 4K sources. The Epson reportedly can produce a brighter image than the Sony and has a dynamic iris to produce a good black level, and it uses a longer-lasting laser light source. The brightest picture mode was, not surprisingly, Bright TV, which measured about 35 foot-lamberts of peak brightness on my 100-inch, 1.1-gain screen. That doesn't quite measure up to the high-brightness home entertainment oriented projectors, but it's still plenty of light output to enjoy well-saturated images in a room with some ambient light. This projector does not have to be confined to a fully light-controlled theater space.

Three years is as good as it gets for manufacturer warranties on home theater projectors, so you can rest easy knowing that you're getting the best. Our sample of the VW350ES did require some adjustment, but we're used to that; review samples frequently endure more bumps and bruises than retail projectors do. Adjusting convergence can be an arduous job, but it is also incredibly important if you want to ensure maximum performance. If your projector does need adjustment, set aside at least an hour or two - and try not to rush. The best part of the VW350ES's image is the exquisite sense of detail, present either from 4K source material or upscaled 1080p Blu-ray content.

The projector uses an ultra-pure and reliable laser light source, which lets you enjoy clear 4K pictures at optimal brightness for up to 20,000 uninterrupted hours. Sony's Wide Dynamic Range Optics contribute to a compact design with better light control by maximizing the potential of the laser light source. The resulting higher color volume means naturally colorful images, even at high brightness levels, and stunning, immersive contrast. Immerse yourself in an incredibly lifelike picture with native 4K that offers 8.3 million pixels.

It’s available for a nominal rental fee, and includes a $25 Crutchfield merchandise credit. But performance in the real world is affected by the acoustics of your car or home, your choice of amplification, and your source material. We still believe that the gold standard for auditioning speakers is hearing them in your own environment — that’s why we offer a 60-day money-back guarantee.

3D setup tools include the ability to adjust the 3D depth and the glasses' brightness. All Sony Elevated Standard projectors enjoy 3-year limited warranties, including a special tech support hotline in case you run into any problems. Galaxy in glass Comes together with a crystal LED lighting Base, emits uninterrupted bright light with multicolor changing alternately, makes this galaxy ornament to be a magical and pocket edition galaxy in the room. Enjoy spectacular brightness and stunning realism, thanks to Wide Dynamic Range Optics that achieve a 95% DCI-P3 wide color gamut. By analyzing every pixel and detecting possible degradation in advance, the Digital Focus Optimizer corrects the image quality so that the focus is better than ever, even in the corners. Delivery time is estimated using our proprietary method which is based on the buyer's proximity to the item location, the delivery service selected, the seller's delivery history and other factors.

I compared the 350ES's black level to that of the Sony VPL-HW30ES 1080p model that I still use as a reference projector. When I manually set the 30ES's iris to its dimmest position, the 30ES's black level was a hair darker, but its bright elements were also much dimmer, so the overall image contrast was not as good as that of the 350ES. When I set the 30ES to one of its auto iris options, brightness improved, but the black level got worse than that of the 4K model.

4K provides four times the picture detail of full HD 1080p. The difference is certainly visible on TV-sized screens, but when you're projecting onto a screen that's 100", 120" or even larger, the enhanced clarity and sense of depth is profound. Still, it's difficult to find fault with the VW350ES, especially when it's one of only a handful of 4K home theater projectors on the market and the most affordable one to date. It retains most of the things we loved about the VW600ES, and the sacrifices it makes seem small in comparison to the enormous drop in price compared to the higher-end model. When all's said and done, we have no reservations about giving the VW350ES our Editor's Choice Award, because it is a fantastic value for the money. We thought the VW600ES was a quiet projector, but if anything the VW350ES is even quieter.
